What You’ll Discover in This Book

This book explores five ways God forms those who teach His Word, offering both spiritual encouragement and practical insight for Christian educators.

Formed by the Master Teacher

Jesus is our first and greatest model for teaching. This chapter explores how His life, words, and ministry shape the way we teach and care for others.

Formed by the Indwelling Teacher

The Holy Spirit does more than assist our teaching—He guides, equips, and works through us. This chapter reflects on the Spirit’s active role in the life of every Christian educator.

Formed Through the Gift of Teaching

Teaching is not merely a responsibility; it is a gift God develops over time. This chapter considers how calling, obedience, and experience work together in the growth of a teacher.

Formed by the Discipline of Studying God’s Word

Every teacher of Scripture must also remain a student of it. This chapter invites readers into a deeper life of study, reflection, and personal transformation through God’s Word.

Formed in Relationship: Learning From Those We Teach

Teaching is never one-sided. This chapter shows how students, questions, and classroom relationships become part of God’s work in shaping the teacher as well.

Philip approaching the Ethiopian eunuch in his chariot

“How can I unless someone explains it to me?” (Acts 8:31)

IT IS NOT BY ACCIDENT

Imagine this moment with me as we watch Philip leave the service and step onto the dusty desert road stretching from Jerusalem to Gaza (Acts 8:26-39).

The sun beats on our backs, the air is still, and all seems ordinary, until the Spirit of God begins to move. Ahead, we see Philip, one of the first deacons of the church, a man who has just been preaching revival in Samaria. Now, at the Spirit’s command, he has left the crowds and proceeds down a lonely road.

As we walk with him, we see a chariot approaching in the distance. Inside rides an Ethiopian eunuch, a man of influence and education, carefully reading from the prophet Isaiah. His lips form the words, but his face shows confusion. Just then, the Spirit whispers to Philip: “Go to that chariot and stay near it” (Acts 8:29). Obediently, Philip moves closer and hears the eunuch reading aloud. Then comes the Spirit-led question: “Do you understand what you are reading?” (Acts 8:30). The eunuch looks up, almost with relief, and answers honestly: “How can I, unless someone guides me?” Here is the moment where the Spirit’s guidance and the teacher’s calling meet. The Spirit led Philip to the right place, at the right time, to meet the right need. It is not a coincidence; it was a divine appointment.

“Blessed are the merciful, for they shall obtain mercy” (Matthew 5:7)

BLESSED ARE THEY

In the fifth chapter of Matthew and verses three to twelve we read what is commonly called the beatitudes. Blessed are the....for the shall....

Jesus captures attention with the very first words of the Sermon on the Mount. His calm authority commands the space. His opening words, what we now call the Beatitudes, are unlike anything his audience has heard. The listeners in his day expected power, but he spoke of meekness. They expected blessings tied to wealth or status, yet he blessed the poor, the mourners, and the persecuted. The contrast alone grips them, and the crowd leans forward.

Jesus uses the unexpected to capture attention, delivering a message that challenges assumptions. At times, it is not a loud voice or a polished presentation that draws students in. It is a surprising question, a story with a twist, or a truth stated freshly. Imagine a Sunday school teacher beginning this lesson by asking: “What if being blessed does not look like success?”
